History

The sailing team has been around since the late 90's, though history is not clear till around 1998.

Prior to 1998 little is known about WSU Sailing, though it is clear that Geoff Webb, Kevin Johnston, Geoff Wood, and John Guido were significant supporters of the club and helped it grow during the beginning years.  As a result our 4 fj's are named Webb, Johnston, Wood and Guido.  It is also rumored that the club was started by a WSU professor named Vanderschalie.

From 1998-2003 the club had many great leaders who contributed to our advancement.  Bryan Daisley was responsible for increasing membership considerably and setting the stage for the club to become an official sports club.  In 2000 the club became a sports club with the help of Jennifer Moorhead and Vanessa Shannen.  Mike Bickford also helped the club by getting multiple boats donated.

In 2003 the sailing team was restructured with new officers and a goal to become more active in the northwest district.

Scott Wilson took over the leadership role with only a couple members and immediately the team started attending races and grew rapidly.

In 2005 Scott started the Cougar Cup regatta.  It was a big success and still happens every year at Vantage in mid-September.  The team then attended most NW regattas plus our first intersectional regatta to San Francisco.  Dave Wheeler also added to the team's success with his great leadership in 2005-2006.

At the end of the 2006-2007 year, Charissa Benson and Scott Wilson were voted to the All Northwest Sailing Team.  Charissa was awarded All Northwest Crew of the Year and Scott won the leadership award.  This was the first time that anyone from WSU made the All Northwest Team.

The team continued as a dominant team in the northwest and ended the 2007-2008 year with a 3rd place finish at district championships led by skippers Scott Wilson and Pat Taylor.
